Jericho’s Science Olympiad Team Makes States

By CAROLINE CHEN

Jericho High School’s Science Olympiad Team A placed 2nd out 44 teams at the Nassau East Division C Regional Science Olympiad Competition at Wantagh High School. The team will be competing at the New York State Division C Science Olympiad Competition at Le Moyne College in Syracuse from March 10th-11th. The 2016-2017 school year marks the third year of the newly formed Science Olympiad team, making this a remarkable feat for the relatively “young” team to achieve.

“In just three years, we made States, and I know that the future of Science Olympiad at Jericho High School will be continued with success,” said Science Olympiad co-advisor, Ms. Hempel.

For the past two years, the team missed the chance of participating in the State Competition by only one place. The heightened motivation to make States this year led to the increased diligence, preparation, and perseverance of all members in their respective events. From working throughout the summer and school year to making study guides and building robots and bridge models, the members of Jericho High School Science Olympiad knew what they aimed to do and achieved their goals, both as a team and as individuals. In addition to winning second place overall, members of Team A placed in the Top Ten for eighteen of the twenty-two events at the Regional Competition. Out of those events, Caroline Chen and Spencer Lee, Benjamin Wong and Brandon Xie, and Emma Gan and Brandon Xie placed first in the events Chemistry Lab, Invasive Species, and Microbe Mission, respectively.

Although Jericho’s Science Olympiad Teams B and C did not make states, both teams performed exceedingly well for their first year, placing 14th and 28th overall, respectively. Team B also placed in the Top Ten for seven events, including Astronomy, Dynamic Planet, Ecology, Fermi Questions, Helicopters, Hydro-geology, and Wind Power.

“I am so proud of how far Jericho’s Science Olympiad has come, and I hope that we can at least make Top Twenty at States this coming March, ” said Captain Sabrina Wong.

Ultimately, Jericho High School’s Team A placed 23rd and won the award for Best New Team at States! Congratulations!
