Girls Basketball Seniors’ Last Shot

By RACHEL SCHREIBSTEIN

The Jericho girls varsity basketball team gave a heartfelt goodbye to their senior players at their senior game played in our Sam Springer gym. As family, friends, and fans of the Jayhawks arrived at the game, they were surrounded by balloons, posters, and pictures that decorated the gym to commemorate the seniors and honor the hard work they put in all season. Before the game began, each senior’s name was announced as she was escorted onto the court with her parents and met by teammates bearing bouquets of flowers. The stands were anything but silent as the spectators continuously cheered and applauded. After the game, there was a special montage video dedicated to the seniors showing their time on the varsity team throughout the years.

With undeniable passion, the team worked extremely hard on the court but could not pull out a win against the Garden City Trojans.

Younger players on the team were sad to say farewell to their teammates. Freshman player Jade S. formed close bonds with each senior on the team and felt like they had a big influence on the team overall. “The seniors have impacted our team in many ways. They are always there for us if we need advice, help, or even just a ride somewhere. They are role models to all of the underclassmen,” she said. Similarly, sophomore Caitlin C. felt that the seniors “brought the team together to make it a fun and memorable season.”

Being on the varsity team for all four years of her high school career, senior Rebecca S. is going to miss playing. She said, “I’m going to miss the feeling after we win an amazing game.” Rebecca recommended that all future players never take one moment on the team for granted, for it was such an incredible experience. “My advice would be to keep playing for as long as you can, and to not stop. You can’t learn the lessons you learn playing a sport while in a classroom,” she added.

There is no doubt that the seniors’ dedication to the sport on and off the court will be missed greatly. We wish the seniors the best of luck in the future and thank them for all they have accomplished!
