Learning from a Pro

By MATTHEW ROTHSTEIN

Esteemed editor of the  “Syosset Jericho Tribune” Dave Gil de Rubio visited Jericho’s New Media Communications class to speak about his profession. He shared his experiences as a reporter, provided writing tips, and even offered the JerEcho staff internship opportunities.

Mr. Gil de Rubio answered all of the JerEcho staff members’ questions and then turned the interview around. This led to an interesting conversation about student journalism and activism in light of the recent Parkland shooting and school walkouts.

Sophomore Jayden K., second from right, said, “I learned that hard work pays off because he has worked so hard in order for the newspaper to become such a successful business.”

Gil de Rubio stressed the importance of relationships and interactions in order to succeed in journalism. Sophomore Jason C. said, “I learned that making good relationships will help you out in the future and will help you succeed.” Sophomore Rachel S. agreed. She explained how Mr. Gil de Rubio impressed upon her that “relationships are very important in the world of journalism.” He encouraged students to build relationships when they are interviewing sources for their news reports.

Junior Christine B., second from right, expresses interest in joining the “Syosset Jericho Tribune” as a summer intern.

After offering advice and anecdotes about his experiences, Gil de Rubio also offered internship opportunities for any aspiring journalism students. Among the students interested was junior Christine B. who said, “I think when Mr. Gil de Rubio came to our school it was very beneficial to me as an aspiring journalist because it gave me a closer look towards what I am aspiring for.” When discussing the internship she said, “I had interest previous to his visit about doing the internship, but his visit sold me on the idea.”

Mr. Gil de Rubio’s visit certainly had a positive impact on the JerEcho staff who are very grateful for his visit.

JerEcho staffer and freshman Richard R. asks Mr. Gil de Rubio a follow up question upon completion of the presentation.
