Learning from a Legend

By JED LIN

Recently the Sports Journalism class had the unique opportunity to interview sports announcing legend Bruce Beck.

Bruce Beck is WNBC’s chief sports anchor and the host of their Sunday night sports show “Sports Final.” During his career, Mr. Beck has covered a multitude of events for News 4 New York including Super Bowls, World Series championships, NBA Finals, Stanley Cup Finals, and the Olympics.

During his conversation with Jericho High School’s sports journalists, Mr. Beck stressed the importance of perseverance. According to Mr. Beck, mistakes help you improve and give you the chance to do just that. He said, “Don’t ever get upset when you make a mistake.”

Mr. Beck’s words inspire students to be enthusiastic and to try their hardest. He said, “Open yourself to all of these opportunities.”

Mr. Beck believes that young people should make the most of the chances they get. “Every attempt is often a milestone on the road to success, said Mr. Beck.”

Mr. Beck shared a sample of his announcing notes with the Sports Journalism class.

Mr. Beck gave advice about writing. He made the point keep trying. He said, “Writing is something you do over and over again. For rewriting, every good idea must be constantly refined on this basis to reach its most perfect state again and again to present it to the audience or yourself. That’s why we rewrite.”
