The start of each year marks a new freshman class entering the High School community; this year, along with the new students, Jericho welcomes a new freshman English teacher, Mrs. Hannah Hicks. Mrs. Hicks strives to contribute to our community by positively impacting her students. Whether it is a whole class or simply just a few, she wants to be able to leave students with positive memories and new knowledge.
Mrs. Hicks decided to become an English teacher because she herself had an English teacher who impacted her. Mrs. Hicks said, “My teacher completely changed my life and outlook on teaching.” Mrs. Hicks loves teaching English for its diversity. She appreciates that it is not limited to simply one field, but is translated into reading, writing, art, music, and more. Despite so many domains, English, and language in general, is still the root of everything.
Lilian Z. ’29 is a student of Mrs. Hicks, and appreciates the classroom environment Mrs. Hicks established. Lilian said, “Mrs. Hicks has an inclusive, encouraging, and engaging approach to teaching English, finding ways to make topics many students would consider ‘boring’ fun for everyone. She adds a layer of excitement by transforming assignments into collaborative games or creative projects.”
Meanwhile, when asked about what she would like her students to know, Mrs. Hicks expressed a desire for her students to realize that despite their professionalism, teachers are ultimately people too. She has her own hobbies, such as fishing, and adores spending time with her family and friends.
Mrs. Hicks never fails to make the people around her smile and help them engage, making her a valuable member of our Jericho High School community.
