Spirits High For Homecoming

Jericho High School kicked off Homecoming Weekend with a pep rally, followed by a dance and district-wide color run. Each event was met with high enthusiasm from the Jericho community.

Organization of the weekend was supervised by Student Council advisers Ms. Romano and Ms. Kahan. “It was really a combined effort from the whole district, including administration from the elementary schools, middle school, and high school,” said Ms. Romano. Senior and Board of Education representative Drew N. and Student Council co-presidents Sophia K. and Lucas B. worked alongside Kahan and Romano to help prepare each event by purchasing supplies and ensuring that everything ran smoothly.

One of the most popular events at Pep Rally is musical chairs.

During the pep rally, students gathered in the gymnasium to celebrate their Jericho pride. Players from each varsity team competed against each other in a variety of games such as Extreme Rock-paper- scissors, musical chairs and plunger scooter races.  “It was very fun because it brought out my competitive side and got me feeling really excited,” said junior and varsity tennis player Emma J. This year the girls varsity volleyball team was awarded the title of Pep Rally Champions.

In 2017, Student Council and Administration brought back the tradition of a homecoming dance during the highly celebrated weekend. This year’s theme for the dance was glow-in-the-dark. Senior and Student Council co-president Luke B. was very pleased with the outcome of the dance. “It’s a great night for everyone in the school to come together and build school spirit without any academic stress,” he said. At the end of the night, seniors Luke B. and Min Y. were crowned Homecoming King and Queen.

Chinese dragons raised excitement at the color run.

The festivities concluded with a district-wide color run hosted at Jericho High School’s track and sports fields. The event consisted of a 1.6 mile run throughout the campus with colored paint being splashed onto participants as they ran along the route. There was no shortage of entertainment, with a DJ and a variety of food trucks available.

High school co-assistant principal David Cohen awarded Kahan and Romano with his Lighthouse Award. Cohen explained that the Lighthouse Award celebrates those who have made a difference in the school for a specific week. “It was given to our Student Council advisers for the great work they did organizing our homecoming weekend,” he said.
