New Year for Norberg

By CHRISTINA MONTANTE

Ms. Norberg, who grew up in Dix Hills, is now back on Long Island teaching Regents and AP Physics at Jericho High School.

She enjoys teaching, especially in the new environment at Jericho. “I have seen really such an impressive number of students just going above and beyond for the sake of learning, and it’s not always reflective of an attempt to get a higher grade,” she said.

Ms. Norberg attended college at Cornell University before she moved to Los Angeles to start her teaching career at Ánimo Ralph Bunche High School. When the opportunity arose to come back to teach where she grew up, Ms. Norberg couldn’t turn it down. She chose Jericho because of its reputation. “The students work very hard towards achieving their goals,” she said.

Ms. Norberg has been able to adapt to the hybrid model of this school year allowing for an easy transition for her students. Sophomore Alexander S. said, “The group work is helping me meet new people. There are very few technical difficulties when it comes to online learning.”

Ms. Norberg acknowledges that the way students learn science has evolved. Ms. Norberg said, “I think the way that we learn and teach science is in the process of changing which I think is challenging for teachers, but I think that it’s a great thing for students, just changing the idea of learning.”

Teaching at a new school is hard, let alone in a pandemic. Considering these challenging times, Ms. Norberg has not let any obstacles interfere with her determination to teach AP Physics.

Creating bonds between teachers and students is difficult, especially with students opting to be fully remote. Ms. Norberg has her email open at all times and responds as quickly as possible. One of her goals is to make sure students understand the material and that they feel comfortable enough to ask her questions. Sophomore Patrick Z. said, “She’s a very understanding teacher who is really passionate about teaching physics, and that really translates to us students enjoying her classes more.”

Not only does Ms. Norberg love teaching, she also enjoys photography and spending time in nature. Ms. Norberg is glad to be at Jericho and is looking forward to continuing teaching all her bright and motivated students.
