Summer 2021 Music Playlist

By Christina Montante and Samara Mehta

A good summer playlist is essential for having a fun summer. We interviewed students and teachers about their musical tastes, and compiled a summer playlist for your enjoyment.

Some of the top hits from the ’90s and early 2000s are making a comeback and are more popular than ever. Iconic singers such as Britney Spears, Third Eye Blind, Red Hot Chili Peppers, NSYNC, Jennifer Lopez and Billy Joel seem to be teacher favorites here in Jericho. Math teacher Mr. Berry said, ¨Billy Joel was usually my go-to so he I guess he would be my favorite. I enjoy his music. I’m a Long Island guy, so maybe that’s part of the connection.¨

DJ Khaled is back this summer with a brand new album called “Khaled Khaled.” This 14-track album features some of the biggest singers of the 21st century such as JAY-Z, Megan Thee Stallion, Cardi B, Nas, Drake, Post Malone, 21 Savage, Justin Timberlake, Lil Wayne, Justin Bieber, Lil Baby, DaBaby, Migos, H.E.R., Roddy Ricch, and more.

English teacher Ms. D’Antonio is a fan of cooperation and so is looking forward to listening to the new DJ Khaled release this summer. She said, “The DJ Khaled album just came out. I was excited for that one, because I wanted to hear all the collaborations that were on it.¨

American rock duo The Black Keys released their newest album, “Delta Kream.” Art teacher Mr. Ciminelli said, “My favorite band right now is The Black Keys. When they first came out, it would just be guitar and drums. They kind of got away from that and got a little bit more produced. Now it’s kind of reverting back to that a little bit, a lot more classic roots and historic blues.¨

In terms of student favorites, another solo album released by J. Cole, “The Fall Off,” seems to be very popular. The album is loosely centered around basketball, one of Cole’s favorite things, and is rumored to be one of his final albums.

The ever popular “Levitating” by Dua Lipa featuring DaBaby is a teacher and student favorite. Although the song was released way back in October, it has surged to the top of Billboard’s digital song sale charts, thanks to its popularity on TikTok.

Olivia Rodrigo’s career has been skyrocketing with her single “Driver’s License” hitting number 1 on Billboard’s Top 100 for 9 weeks, her next release “Deja Vu” hitting number 8, and her third single released “Good 4 U.” These were the first couple of songs before releasing her new album “Sour.”

The album has gone viral on all platforms and is by far a teen favorite. It is a go-to for singing in the car with your friends. “All of her songs on the album have so much emotion put into it and make it very enjoyable to listen to, and has definitely been my first choice of music to listen to recently” said freshman Camryn Y.

Iconic artist Taylor Swift has re-recorded her first 6 and most successful albums after breaking ties with Big Machine Records. Taylor Swift likes to keep her fans on their feet, and introduced a vault to her social media platforms which contain mixed up letters that can be unscrambled to find names of new song releases. Freshman Sydney B. said, ¨She does a lot of Easter eggs. That’s why Taylor Swift Fans are like crazy and it just became her tradition.

Right now some favorite Taylor Swift songs are “Love Story (Taylor’s Version),” “Mr. Perfectly Fine,” “August” and “Willow.”
