Wishing Walsh Well

By CRISTINA HOSSACK

Chemistry teacher Mr. Walsh is new to the teaching field and has started his first year of teaching here at Jericho as a leave-replacement for Ms. Risi.

Mr. Walsh’s first few months of teaching have been a positive experience. He said, “I am excited to go to work every day.”

When hiring new teachers, Curriculum Associate for Science and Technology Education Mr. Cummings looks for someone with a wide range of qualifications. He said, “We are looking for somebody that cares about children and education, is comfortable with the content they teach, and simultaneously works well with their colleagues within the school. We are looking for the whole package.”

Mr. Cummings was excited to have Mr. Walsh join his department. “When I met Mr. Walsh, he impressed me with all of those characteristics, and I felt that he was the best fit,” Mr. Cummings said.

Mr. Walsh is very dedicated to his occupation, and shows much appreciation towards his classes and students. He makes an effort to keep his lessons fun and engaging by interacting with his students and incorporating fun games like Blooket into his lessons.

Students appreciate Mr. Walsh’s efforts. Sophomore Madison L. said, “It is a very fun environment, and I really enjoy the fact that he teaches everyone in a very effective way.”

Mr. Walsh’s overall teaching experience has been great so far, but it is important to note that teaching during COVID-19 has presented him with some challenges. Mr. Walsh said, “I want to see people’s faces and their reactions when they’re like, ‘I get it now!’ I’m always looking for ways to engage them, but masks make it difficult to really communicate emotions and feelings.”

Mr. Walsh’s time at Jericho High School will end just before Thanksgiving break when Ms. Risi returns from maternity leave and he begins his new job at Babylon High School. On behalf of all your students, the JerEcho wishes you well, Mr. Walsh!
