Just Who Jericho Needs

Jericho’s newest female role model Dr. Finlay is taking on her newest role as the high school assistant principal with spirit and passion.

Dr. Finlay joined Jericho for its supportive community. She said, “The students, teachers, and community are amazing. It was a great match, and I was happy to bring my knowledge and ideas.”

Dr. Finlay is excited for the opportunity to mentor students as a member of the high school administration. She said, “I feel I am a strong role model as the woman on the team, and I feel I can be there for not only the young girls, but all students as they go through high school and their teenage years.”

Dr. Finlay has worked in education for 10 years, and was a curriculum associate in Jericho last year. She obtained her bachelor’s degree at Saint Joseph’s University, her master’s at Long Island University, and her doctorate at St. John’s.

Dr. Finlay started her career teaching at Comsewogue Elementary School. She later became the assistant director of Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) which protects the health, safety, and education of students. Jericho Administration was looking for someone with similar experience. Dr. Finlay said, “I am really proud of the work we did here with bringing new programs and expanding special education opportunities at the high school particularly.”

She added, “Being an assistant principal is still very new, but I am definitely proud to get to know the students and establish relationships with them.”

Co-principal Mr Cohen praised Dr. Finlay’s expertise. He said, “She comes with a tremendous amount of knowledge, specifically for special education, which is incredibly healthy. I think her most important contribution is her getting to know kids and really putting in the effort to make those connections, which is very essential.”

Mr. Cohen also explained that Dr. Finlay provides a great resource for students who require immediate support. “She spends many, many, many hours a week talking about the school, students, programs, leadership challenges and how to handle matters correctly,” Mr. Cohen added.

Senior Ava T. appreciates her interactions with Dr. Finlay. “I think the new assistant principal is awesome. I always see her around school, and she helped me at the pep rally. She is such a great supporter and has a ton of Jayhawk spirit,” she said.

Dr. Finlay has impressed the student council as well. Senior and Student Council President Ruby S. said, “Dr. Finlay is trying to connect with students through social media, collaborating with Student Council, and really is an active participant in Jericho. It is great to have young blood on the team.”

Dr. Finlay has gotten to know many students. Senior and Board of Education student representative Jenna T. said, “Dr. Finlay is very forward, willing, eager, and very helpful. I like her background, and it is great to have a young woman role model.”

Teachers feel Dr. Finlay fits perfectly in her new role. Chemistry teacher Mrs. Umile said, “Considering she has worked with a diverse population in the past, I believe she will be able to bring that in to make a great support system in her new role.”

Outside of school, Dr. Finlay loves spending time with her newly-born nephew. She also loves to travel, stay active, and watch sports, particularly hockey. She said, “I used to play field hockey and lacrosse, and I am so excited for the lacrosse season and to watch all the games.”

Dr. Finlay’s diverse experiences, determined attitude, and love of education are sure to transform Jericho High School for the better.
