Fresh on the Mound

Although he was a freshman last spring, Joe Cavallaro was an important player on Jericho High School’s varsity baseball team that won their division.

Baseball is part of Joe’s everyday life. In addition to playing for the school team, he plays for travel teams. Teammate Joseph Z. recalled the first time he saw Joe on the mound. “The velocity of Joe’s fastball is extremely impressive for a freshman and a lefty,” he said.

The speed of Joe’s fastball is over 80 miles per hour.

Joe’s family has always been massive New York Yankees fans, and Joe grew up admiring Derek Jeter. Joe first started playing baseball at 4 years old and developed a love of the sport. Ever since, Joe has always worked hard to try and achieve his dream of playing in the Major Leagues.

Joe’s natural leadership skills are celebrated by fellow underclassmen and coach Bryan Ciminelli. “Joe provides a quiet leadership that you expect from a younger player, which is huge,” he said.

Joe’s teammate sophomore Justin W. recalled his interactions with Joe. “Joe is a very hardworking and talented man on and off the baseball field,” he said.

Fans of the Jericho baseball team praise Joe as a focused team player. Junior Camryn Y. said, “Joe is a hardworking, dedicated player who would always sacrifice himself if it would help his team and teammates.”

Last year Joe posted excellent numbers against older players in his first game, pitching 3 innings with 7 strikeouts. He ended his freshman season with 40 strikeouts in 18 innings, a K/9 of 19; he handled multiple positions, from the outfield to infield and the mound. At the plate, Joe had a strong batting average of .571 with 17 RBIs and an impressive on-base percentage (OBP) of .698. Joe was an excellent asset to the team, which ultimately helped the team win the conference.

This year, Joe’s teammates, fans and coaches excitedly anticipate what he will accomplish as the Jericho baseball team plays in a more competitive division.
