Jericho’s Unshakable Badminton Team

By JED LIN and JOANNA KWAK

The Jericho boys badminton team finished yet another undefeated season. The boys won all 10 of their regular season matches, leaving their opponents scoreless in four of them.

The team had a very strong start in the postseason. The boys dominated Roslyn with a score of 7 to 0. They continued their winning streak all the way to the Nassau county championship.

After his first year as the badminton coach, Mr. LaRosa expressed his excitement to lead this team. He said, “It was my first year coaching, so it was nice to be part of that. I know that we are a very successful team, so it was very exciting.”

Junior and first doubles player Jerry Zhang was very proud of his teammates. He said, “Winning the county championship was a great achievement for us and our coach. It’s our 7th consecutive year winning, which we’re extremely proud of. We bring a lot of pride and commitment to practice and games throughout the season, making us stronger as a team.”

Jerry went on to explain how the team’s new coach worked so well with all the players. He said, “It’s also our coach’s first year coaching, so the accomplishment was just as big and thrilling for him as it was for us. He fostered an amazing environment where we wanted to come to practice every day and enjoy the process.”

In reflecting on the season, Coach LaRosa emphasized the team’s work ethic. He said, “The strength of the team is their hard work. They come to practice every day and they put in a couple of hours conditioning.”

After winning the Nassau County Championship, the badminton team is now preparing for the Long Island Championship in June. Their next opponents will be the Suffolk county champs who compete in the spring.
