A Memorable Milestone for Coach Schneider

By MILEY YAKUEL

Varsity girls basketball coach Andy Schneider recently earned his 250th career win. This achievement highlights years of dedication, leadership and commitment. Previously, Coach Schneider secured wins at North Shore, Island Trees, and Wheatley before joining Jericho and taking over for Coach Cantwell in 2014. Coach Schneider has built a strong and very competitive program, leading the team to multiple playoff appearances throughout his tenure here.

Coach Schneider’s leadership and dedication have been a driving force behind the team’s growth and success. His players know that he has faith in them and it shows with their success on the court.  Freshman Sonia Ngai said, “Coach Schneider has always believed in us and always pushes us to the best of our abilities.”

These are characteristics that Coach Schneider carries with him both on and off the court. He said, “Winning 250 games means a lot. It shows a continued level of commitment and success. I’ve been extremely lucky to coach amazing players who have shared the same passion and enthusiasm for the game of basketball.”

As the team celebrated Coach Schneider’s 250th win, players reflected on the impact he has had on their success. Senior Katelyn Choi said, “Reaching his 250th win shows us how much he has done for our team and program.”

Coach Schneider led his team to a 56-43 victory over Great Neck South on January 13th to gain his 250th career win.

Assistant Coach D’Antonio joined Coach Schneider in 2017 and has been an integral part of the success of the basketball program. Coach D’Antonio said, “To achieve 250 wins is quite the feat. And to do it at multiple schools, with teams of varying abilities, is truly admirable. Coach has taught me so much, and he truly eats, sleeps and breathes Jericho basketball. It’s been an honor being his second chair.”

Junior Skyler Derector said, “Coach has a great attitude towards the team and understands where we are and where we need to improve. It’s a huge milestone to reach 250 career wins, and no one deserves it more than Coach Schneider.”

Coach Schneider has helped shape players into strong athletes and leaders. Players often say that the basketball team feels like a family. Junior Sophie Green, who has been with the program since middle school, loves the family culture Coach Schneider fosters. Green said, “From pizza parties to team bonding at Round One, I feel super connected to the team. I think that builds our chemistry on the court.”

As he continues to guide the team toward future success, Coach Schneider’s goal remains the same. Schneider said, “All my teams have begun each season intending to bring Jericho girls basketball its first ever conference championship. I’m hoping with our returning 11 players that next season is the year!”
