Surely, you have seen the engaging daily posts on the Jericho School District’s Instagram page. Wondering who’s behind the camera creating this content? It’s our new Public Relations Director, Ms. Maggie Rose Melito!
Ms. Melito’s daily routine includes capturing moments throughout the school day that hold a special image and purpose across all schools within the district. She uses pictures and videos to share her discoveries with the Jericho School District.
Ms. Melito attended SUNY New Paltz for her bachelor’s degree in Journalism, and then pursued her graduate degree in New Media and Photojournalism at The George Washington University. Before working at Jericho, Ms. Melito’s journey in education started in her role as a teacher. She has always loved documenting adolescence, as she found that her childhood years were some of the best moments of her life.
This passion for capturing the formative moments of life is what motivated Ms. Melito to take on this role at the district. And Ms. Melito has innovated the role, adding her own mark to all that she creates. For example, every Friday, she travels to the elementary schools to interview students for her Friday Advice Reels. This Instagram video series spotlights students’ opinions and preferences on various topics. Outside of the elementary schools, Ms. Melito also searches for stories from middle and high school students, and highlights classroom experiences that bring wonder.
Ms. Melito advises students who would like to major in Communications to be good listeners and notice the tiny moments in every story in order to be successful in their careers. She said, “There are so many different secrets in the world that will go unnoticed because people aren’t looking for them.”
When she is not photographing, you can find Ms. Melito reading, collecting seashells, and riding her bike. Ms. Melito claimed to have never seen a school’s journalism program as strong as The JerEcho, so she can’t wait to see what this year has in store for her and our journalists!
