Courtside Chronicles: End of January Recap

BY JORDAN GREENSTEIN ’28

Welcome back to Courtside Chronicles! The month of January was a rollercoaster for the Jayhawks on the hardwood, loaded with huge performances, tough losses, and big victories.

On January 14, the Jericho Jayhawks won against the Oyster Bay Lady Baymen, rising up to 11-2. Oyster Bay’s Mia Bencal scored 27 points, and Jericho fought back with their standout Angela Tan ’29, who dropped 18 points in their victory.

On January 17, Jericho collided with an undefeated MacArthur squad, losing 14-68. MacArthur’s Ysabelle Perillo led the charge with 16 points, while Jericho’s Sonia Ngai ’28 fought hard on the boards, snagging 7 rebounds.

On January 23, Jericho came up short against Calhoun, losing 36-59. Calhoun’s Lia Biscardi scored 14 points, and Jericho’s Sonia Ngai ’28 led the Jayhawks, scoring 16 points while co-captain Sophie Green ’26 scored 10 points.

On January 27, the Jayhawks bounced back and beat Long Beach 47-39.  Long Beach’s Brianna Brothell scored 13 points and Jericho’s Sonia Ngai ’28 led the flock once again, scoring 18 points with a pair of three pointers.

On January 30, Jericho kept their winning culture rolling with a big win of 57-36 against Great Neck South. Great Neck’s Raphaella Covitt scored 11 points while Jericho’s Sonia Ngai ’28 scored 16 points and Angela Tan ’29 scored 12 points.

Sadie Krangle ’26 spoke about how the Jayhawks made adjustments to recover from some tough mid-January losses. Krangle said, “Coming off a two-game winning streak, I think the biggest thing we fixed was playing our hardest from start to finish. We focused on capitalizing on our opportunities offensively and our attitude was a lot better. Our energy on the court was unmatched, and it showed on both ends of the court.”

Ngai ’28 added that the team’s mentality has also improved since the losses. “We are playing with more confidence since in the back of our minds we know that we are strong enough to win any game [against any] team that comes our way if we play with our team chemistry,” said Ngai.

The season is slowly coming to an end for the Jayhawks with their “Senior Night” game against Bellmore JFK on February 2, a home game against New Hyde Park on February 5, and a big final game against MacArthur. Catch you next time with Courtside Chronicles!
