On February 13, student reporters from The JerEcho and Jericho High School’s New Media Communications class took a trip to Adelphi University for Adelphi University’s annual Press Day. At this day-long event, JerEcho reporters explored their passion for media through various workshops, and ended the day by claiming their highly-coveted Quill Awards. The Quill Awards are an annual competition that commend student journalism across Long Island high schools.
Jericho’s reporters placed first across three Quill Awards categories, and second in one category, sweeping the competition. Awards included:
First Place for Best News Article: Mia Shu ’26 and Bhavin Balgobind ’26 / “NYS Puts Student Cell Phones on Silent”
First Place for Most Outstanding Reporter: Madison Lee ’27
First Place for Best News Video: “The JNN S3 E1”
Second Place for Most Outstanding Online Student Newspaper

In various Press Day workshops, students heard from experienced journalists, viewed websites from different schools and programs for inspiration, and networked to innovate. In workshops such as “How to Find Story Ideas and Sources” and “Entrepreneurship and the Arts”, student reporters explored creative techniques and practical tips for discovering compelling journalism story ideas. Student reporters also learned how to build a sustainable career in the professional world of journalism, especially amidst AI noise.
Adelphi Press Day provided many valuable learning moments for Jericho’s JerEcho team, inspiring further growth and development for future awards seasons.
