Breaking Down The 2026 Battle: Highlights From This Year’s Battle Of The Classes

BY ETHAN RUBIN ’28

On Friday, March 13, Jericho High School celebrated its annual Battle of the Classes, an exciting day where students in grades nine through twelve compete against one another in different events to show their school—and class—spirit. From the loud cheering in the stands to the intense competitions on the Sam Springer court, the whole day was full of fun as each student tried their hardest to represent their class and win.

The first battle match-up of the day was between the freshmen and the juniors. Both grades’ entrances were top-notch and had the crowd on the edge of their seats. Many students were impressed by the dance-off event due to the superb choreography. The entire match-up was a back-and-forth struggle between the two grades, ultimately leading to the junior class’s win.

The second match-up was between the seniors and the sophomores. Throughout all of this battle’s challenges, the score remained somewhat close. The greatest event between the two grades was indisputably the knock-out basketball tournament, as many of Jericho’s basketball stars were represented on the court. Mimi D. ’28 said, “During the knock-out basketball event, I felt that everyone was the most invested because of how exciting and nerve-racking it was.” As the second battle came to an end, the seniors took the win. Their spirit showed that they wanted the win more as they prepared for the final round of Battle.

The third and final match-up was between the upperclassmen: the juniors faced off against the seniors. In this battle, students participated in a few final events, one of them being the classic dodge ball game. As the balls bolted back and forth across the gym, both grades were loud, and ultimately the juniors won the game.

Finally, in true Battle fashion, the whole day came down to the tug of war event. This year, the tug of war occurred in multiple rounds divided by gender.  Health teacher Mrs. Denise Schmitt said, “I jumped in to help the juniors during tug of war and sadly I did not do much to help, but it was fun.” The seniors dominated the tug of war event.

In the end, the 2026 Battle of the Classes came down to the wire. The competition stayed close throughout the entire final match-up, making it one of the most exciting Battle of the Classes in recent years. Ultimately, through the tug of war, the seniors were able to pull ahead and secure the win, proving their experience and teamwork. Overall, the 2026 Battle of the Classes brought the whole school together and left everyone excited for next year.
