A Night to Remember: JHS Juniors Will Celebrate With Junior Banquet

BY ACHINT KAUR ’27

On Friday, May 15, 2026, the high school cafeteria will be transformed into a night under the stars as Jericho High School hosts a new event: Junior Banquet, an event similar to a Junior Prom. This event was made possible through the persistent efforts of the Junior Class Student Council, who underwent a process to get approval for their junior banquet. After sending out a student interest email to the junior class, the Junior Class Student Council proceeded to get event approval and begin planning their “Night Under The Stars.”

While the approval of Junior Banquet is new, the idea itself is not. For years, upperclassmen and members of the student council have pushed for an additional school dance before senior year. Previous efforts were unsuccessful, but strong interest from the Class of 2027 led to this event’s approval, marking the school’s commitment to honoring student voice in event planning.

“Student Council has been working toward this for a long time,” said Sophy X. ’27, the public relations officer for the Class of 2027 Student Council. “We knew students wanted more opportunities for events like this, especially something as memorable as a prom.”

Class of 2027’s Student Council Secretary Luke R. ’27 also emphasized the role of student input in making this event a reality. “Once we saw how many people responded to the email expressing interest in this event, it showed that this wasn’t just a small group,” he said. The results made it clear that interest in a junior prom was widespread.

Jericho has traditionally only held a Senior Prom, making the addition of Junior Banquet a significant change. While some students are curious about how Junior Banquet will compare, others are simply excited to attend a formal event without the added pressure that often comes with senior year.

“I think it’s really exciting that we get this chance,” said Shelly C. ’27. “It gives us something to look forward to, and it’s a way to make memories with our friends before senior year.” For many students, the event represents more than just a dance; it is an opportunity to spend time together and create lasting memories.

The introduction of Junior Banquet demonstrates how student voices can lead to meaningful change, especially at Jericho where administration honors these voices. If successful, Junior Banquet could become a lasting tradition at Jericho High School.

For now, however, the Class of 2027 is busy picking out outfits and eagerly making plans for May.
