Jericho Baseball’s 1-5 Season Start Shows Promise and Need for Focus

BY JORDAN GREENSTEIN ’28

On April 8, Jericho beat Roslyn 6-3 in their first win of the season. Pitcher Bhavin Balgobind ’26 went two-for-two with a run-batted-in and a stolen base and also struck out four batters in his 5-inning outing to earn the win for Jericho. Israel Dejesus ’28 went one-for-four with three runs-batted-in. Dylan Grotas ’27 went one-for-three with a run-batted-in and two runs scored.

On April 10, Jericho unfortunately lost their second game, moving their record down to 1-1, with a 2-12 loss to Roslyn. Roslyn’s pitcher Jake Giordano ’28 allowed one earned run and struck out seven in his 5-inning outing. Even though they lost their game to Roslyn, the Jayhawks put up a fight, losing 9-10 in extra innings.

On April 14, Jericho started their three-game set against Bethpage and lost 2-14. Bethpage’s Will Lynn ’26 allowed no earned runs, four hits, all while striking out five batters in his outing. On the batting side, Lynn went three-for-three with a home-run and three runs-batted-in.

On April 15, Jericho continued their losing streak with another 3-13 loss to Bethpage, which snowballed on April 17, when Jericho extended their four-game losing streak to five with another 3-6 loss to Bethpage.

The Jayhawks plan to refocus on the basics in order to return to winning. Coach Greg Boyle said, “We need to continue to do the small things right, like having solid at bats, cleanly fielding and throwing the ball, and running the bases well. If we continue to do those things well and come up with some timely hits and plays to capitalize on some of the opponents’ mistakes, we will continue to improve.”
