In recent years, promposals have become a popular high school tradition across the country. These creative and sometimes extravagant ways for students to ask someone to prom mix together surprise, romance, and a lot of fun. Unlike a simple “will you go to prom with me?” in the hallway, promposals often involve big signs, special locations, music, flowers, or even flash mobs. The idea is to make the ask as memorable as possible, so the person feels truly special.
The trend really took off with social media, where teens share their promposal videos and photos online for everyone to see. What started as a simple question has now grown into a cultural phenomenon, with students spending weeks planning and buying props for their promposals.
Some promposals are sweet and casual, like a picnic date with a cute note. Meanwhile, others are over the top, involving sports fields, school assemblies, or even hiring a plane with a banner.
At Jericho High School, the excitement around promposals was clear this season. One standout moment happened on a community basketball court, where Sadie K. ’26 was promposed to by her classmate Halil A. ’26.
Halil created a basketball-themed sign asking her to prom and assembled a basket filled with her favorite snacks, candies, and little prom keepsakes. The whole set-up turned the basketball court, which is one of Sadie’s favorite places, into a personal spot for the big question, with friends watching and cheering as Halil made his move.
Halil’s hard work definitely paid off. “I was completely surprised and so happy when I saw the sign and basket,” said Sadie. “Halil made it really special, and of course I said yes!”
Stories like Sadie’s and Halil’s show how promposals add extra joy to the end of the school year. These promposals bring creativity and happiness to students during a busy time full of exams and graduation preparations. While not every promposal needs to be huge, the effort behind them often makes the whole prom experience even better.
Jericho High School, like many others, continues to see these fun promposal moments that students will remember long after the dance is over. Whether simple or elaborate, promposals keep the spirit of high school romance alive and exciting.
