Jericho Set for Friday Night Lights Battle Against Roosevelt

BY MARCUS KRANZ ’27

This Friday, September 18, the Jericho Jayhawks football team will face off against the Roosevelt Roughriders in their first game of the season after forfeiting last week due to a lack of players cleared for contact. As for Roosevelt, they are looking to rebound after losing their opening game to Bellmore JFK, 34-26.

Jericho will have some key positions to fill after losing several important pieces from last year’s team. On the offensive side of the ball, the biggest questions are how the Jayhawks replace the production of quarterback Max Spector ’26, and how the offense will fare. Jericho will rely on players like Captain and Quarterback Austin Weiss ’27 this season as the team looks to fill some of the holes left by last year’s athletes.

Besides Weiss, the Jayhawks also return key pieces like captains Brody Morgan ’27, Jake Morgan ’27, and Zach Spivak ’27. On the defensive side, captain Alex Mizrahi ’27 will be an important returning player. Weiss thinks a win would go far for this team. He said, “A win would do everything. It would help us get everything we want to accomplish this season. Prove to everyone Jericho is here and ready to play this season.” Jake Morgan ’27 will also play an important role for the Jayhawks, particularly as Jericho looks to establish its running game against Roosevelt. Morgan thinks that containing the Roosevelt offense will be key for success on Friday. “We need to play fast and quick and keep their running backs contained,” said Morgan, “If we do that, we have the key to success.”

Prediction: Jericho wins 21-14 as the defense plays well, creating short fields for the offense. Austin Weiss, Brody Morgan, and Jake Morgan each have a touchdown.
