Where is The Spider Menace Now? A Review of “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”

BY BRADLEY WILLIS ’30

Peter Parker is officially back with the latest film installment, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.”

For those who don’t know, Tom Holland’s “Spider-Man” series starts with “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” which takes place after his introduction in “Avengers: Civil War.” This movie has Peter Parker swinging around the city while trying to stop small crimes. However, after tracking the Vulture to Washington, D.C., and jailbreaking the suit given to him by Tony Stark, the Spidey suit is taken away from Parker. Yet he doesn’t stop fighting—instead, he makes a suit himself and fights the Vulture.

Time skip to 2018: Spidey is back to fight Thanos in “Avengers: Infinity War,” but sadly gets erased from existence because the Avengers are unable to stop the Blip. In this instance, Thanos kills half the universe with a snap of his fingers.

Time skip again to 2019 in real life, but 2023 in the movie: Tony Stark and the Avengers gather the Infinity Stones and bring back everyone who was killed in the Blip. Spider-Man is back to fight Thanos in “Avengers: Endgame,” and sadly watches Tony Stark die—but still honors Stark by wearing the iron spider suit he made.

8 months later, while trying to confess his feelings to MJ on a school trip to Europe, Parker gets tricked by Mysterio. After defeating Mysterio, Quinten Beck reveals Parker’s identity as Spider-Man.

During the winter of 2024, Parker is faced with mass scrutiny as his identity is revealed, so he visits Doctor Strange to make a spell to ensure that everyone forgets he’s Spider-Man; however, Parker tampers with the spell, resulting in the villains from Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s universes coming to Tom Holland’s Spider-Man’s universe. Later, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield reappear in Tom Holland’s Universe.

Together, all three Spider-Men defeat the villains and send them back to their respective universes. Then, Doctor Strange casts the spell to make everyone forget who Peter Parker is. Now, in a world where nobody remembers who he is but remembers Spider-Man, Parker faces new foes, yet still keeps the city clean. But with great stress comes even greater power, which, in turn, creates greater responsibility. Will the spider bite take control of Parker, or will he embrace it as part of his identity?

That’s for me to know, and you to find out.

Overall, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” was a good movie. I would give it 5 Spideys out of 5. I would recommend it to Marvel fans who want a good addition to the franchise—it still doesn’t beat “Into the Spider-Verse” as my favorite Spider-Man film, but it’s a good film to add to the storyline of Tom Holland’s MCU Spider-Man.
