Defying All Odds, Jericho Jayhawks Beat Garden City Trojans in Major Upset

BY SIENNA WEISS ’30

On Oct. 8, 2026, the Jericho Jayhawks boys’ soccer team (4-6-2) “shocked the world,” according to players, by pulling off their biggest win of the season, defeating the Garden City Trojans (11-1).

The Jayhawks’ win over Garden City was a major upset, as Garden City’s team is currently ranked #1 in the Nassau County AA 1 standings and #23 in the state. Meanwhile, the Jericho Jayhawks, ranked #4 behind Garden City in the Nassau AA1 rankings and #143 in New York State, beat the powerhouse by 1 goal. Avery Ragozino ’28 scored a breakthrough goal to break the tie.

According to the players, this huge win was exhilarating, otherworldly, and a major morale boost. The win was extra sweet, as Varsity Media, a Long Island sports streaming outfit, was at the game to live stream and commentate. Lucas Grieco ’28 said,  “Having Varsity Media [at the game] made the stakes higher.”

In their own words, the Jayhawks were “hungry to win.” Sonam Sherpa ’28 said “Our willpower set us apart against Garden City. We were hungry to win and we played like a real team.” It wasn’t the team’s spirit that led to their win. Zander Ragozino ’28 said, “Our consistency led to our win. We kept the same strategy the whole game and it paid off.” Consistency in this game looked like a tight structure and formation. “We kept our structure and our formation,” said Grieco, “Garden City tried to possess the ball, but we didn’t get impatient.”

As AJ Setton ’28 said, “We had something to prove on a big stage. It was a full team effort from the bench to the field and the stands.” While the Jayhawks ended their season without making it to the playoffs, next year’s seniors view this game as a tide-changer, setting the stage for a strong 2027 season. Sherpa said, “We are going to be coming in strong next season and [we will be] winning.”
