Welcome back to another Funny Foodies Restaurant Review!
For the first time in Funny Foodies history I am doing a re-review. Last year, I went to Umbertos of New Hyde Park and I remember getting buffalo wings which were a 7.2 out of 10, as well as buffalo chicken pizza which was a 7.7 out of 10; they weren’t great, they were fine, and when I posted, so many people told me that I ordered all wrong.
Everyone told me that Umberto’s you have to get the fried calamari and their Sicilian slice, which famous pizza reviewer Dave Portnoy gave an 8.6–an unbelievable score for him.
So hearing all of this feedback, I decided to re-try Umberto’s on Friday night. To start off my meal, I followed people’s advice and ordered the fried calamari. The fried calamari came with a tub of steaming hot marinara sauce and a lemon. The fried calamari was great, perfectly fried and seasoned, and the marinara sauce–which was definitely homemade–was very sweet. The marinara sauce was a great addition to the fried calamari, and the lemon made the calamari have a nice citrus flavor to it. I would give the fried calamari a 8.2 out of 10: Very good. It would get in the 9s if it were a bit more tender.
Next came the Sicilian pie, which I was very excited about, given all the hype about it. The Sicilian slice came steaming hot and it was huge. The pizza was absolutely unbelievable. The cheese was nice and melty, and it featured the same delectable marinara sauce from the fried calamari. On the pizza, the sauce was very sweet and I do love a sweet pizza. Overall I am going to give this pizza a 8.4 out of 10 because it was a phenomenal pizza. For them to get in the 9s I think maybe the slice needs a bit more of a crispy undercarriage meaning the bottom of the pizza could be a little crispier and then it can possibly be in the 9s.
Now that I got the right things everyone definitely should give Umberto’s a try because it is definitely worth it and it will definitely not disappoint if you get the order I got. As I said the pizza was very good and the sauce was magnificent due to the sweetness and the fried calamari was perfectly fried and seasoned paired with that sweet marinara sauce.
