Almost an Actuary, Always a Teacher

By SEAN CHAE

On Ms. June Yoo’s first day of teaching at Jericho High School, all of the students left her class smiling. Ms. Yoo quickly gained the favor of her students as a new math hire.

Before becoming a teacher, Ms. Yoo studied mathematics in college. She began studying to become an actuary but changed her mind. Ms. Yoo said, “I took a couple of the exams, and then I realized that I wanted to become a teacher.”

After choosing her career path, Ms. Yoo decided to teach high school math because she enjoys teaching the material in pre-calculus and AP calculus.

Ms. Yoo originally joined the Jericho School District as a leave replacement in the 2020-2021 school year. At the time of her hiring, Ms. Yoo had been taking a break from her teaching job in order to care of her children, but when the opening for the leave replacement was available, she seized the opportunity.

Now, in the 2021-2022 school year, Ms. Yoo has been hired as a full time teacher here at Jericho High School. Mathematics Curriculum Associate Ms. Kriegstein said, “I found her to be absolutely outstanding in the classroom.”

With her experience in teaching and knowledge of mathematics, Ms. Yoo’s classes are engaging, and she is able to easily connect with her students. Sophomore Jean-Claude P. said, “I love how easy it is to learn in Ms. Yoo’s class. Her classes are always fun and she teaches well.”

Ms. Yoo often uses online resources during her lessons. Ms. Yoo said, “I use Canvas and Classkick, Desmos, Delta [Math], and AP Classroom for my AP class.”

Ms. Yoo finds working at Jericho to be very rewarding, and she quickly bonded with the Jericho students. “All the kids are respectful and always willing to try new things,” she said.

It is clear that Ms. Yoo has been taking the adjustment to a new school in stride. She said,  “I’ve been loving it here at Jericho.”
