Marcus’s Postgame Pulse: Cougars Outlast Jayhawks, Handing Them Second Straight Loss
BY MARCUS KRANZ ’27
On Saturday, October 4th, the Jericho Jayhawks took on the Bellmore JFK Cougars in an evenly-matched contest. On the first play of the game, Bellmore JFK recovered their own kickoff. After a few penalties, the Jayhawks found themselves in an early hole, trailing 14–0 at halftime.
In the second half, Bellmore JFK scored on their opening drive to extend their lead to 21–0. Jericho responded as wide receiver Brody Morgan ’27 scored on a 36 yard reception to make it 21–7. Zachary Spivak ’27 made the kickoff and his onside kick was recovered by Brody Morgan ’27, giving the Jayhawks momentum. Brody Morgan ’27 finished the day with another 100-yard performance, as he had 8 catches for 107 yards. However, that momentum was halted when quarterback Max Spector ’26 was ejected for fighting, a call that took the life out of Jericho’s offense, which turned the ball over on downs to end a promising drive. The Jayhawks would go on to lose 27-7.
Defensively, the Jayhawks couldn’t neutralize the Cougars’ option attack. Leading the way on the defensive side, Jake Morgan ’27 led the way with six solo tackles and two assisted tackles, while free safety Austin Weiss ’27 finished the game with five solo tackles and three assisted tackles. The Jayhawks will look to rebound as they play host to the Roslyn Bulldogs Friday night under lights at 6:00 p.m. as they will look to end their two game losing streak.
