BY KONSTANTINA SACOULAS ’26

Welcome to the second segment of Tina’s Takeaways, where I share the happenings of a week in the life at Jericho Schools!

A Walk in the Right Direction: Jericho Middle School’s Annual Bullying Prevention Walk

On October 23, Jericho Middle School hosted their annual Olweus Bullying Prevention Kickoff with guest speakers and a walk around the track. Jericho Middle School invited the fifth graders from the elementary schools to join them in their walk against bullying so they could learn what it means to be an upstander. Dan Olweus, creator of the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, has conducted the first systematic study of a bullying intervention program. Studies have indicated a reduction in reports of being bullied and bullying others of about 35 to 45 percent among students involved in the program. Jericho Middle School believes that their students should walk around the track to show that they do not stand by, but instead they stand up to bullying!

Teachers Serve More Than Homework at Tennis with Teachers

On October 23, the Girls Tennis program hosted their third annual Tennis With Teachers Tournament, where students were able to play a game of tennis alongside their favorite teachers. Tennis With Teachers was also a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness, so all funds went straight to the Maurer Foundation. Girls Tennis was responsible for making baskets for the fundraiser raffles. Co-captain Vanshika T. and her doubles partner Mr. Engelke won this tournament for their third year in a row!
