Marcus’s Postgame Pulse: Jericho’s Defense Powers 33–24 Win Over Glen Cove
BY MARCUS KRANZ ’27
On Friday, October 31, the Jericho Jayhawks took on the Glen Cove Big Red in the penultimate game of the season, which was also Jericho’s Senior Night. Both teams had a great start to this game, as Glen Cove took the lead and went for a failed two-point conversion attempt. Jericho, however, responded with a J.P. Wang ’26 15-yard touchdown run. Jericho converted the point after attempt to make the score 7-6. Glen Cove, however, did not stop, as they again got into the red zone and ran the ball in on a two-yard touchdown run, courtesy of Michael Telese. Glen Cove did not convert their two-point attempt.
The game’s big turning point came when Jonathan Fortunoff ’26 had a 42-yard scoop and score. Max Spector ’26 scrambled his way 39 yards for a touchdown, capping off a huge first half for the Jayhawks with an exclamation point as they took a 19-12 lead into halftime.
In the second half, the Jayhawks’ defensive heroics did not stop as Jake Morgan ’27 forced a fumble, and Hudson Gingold ’26 scooped the ball, running it back nearly the length of the football field in a 96-yard scoop and score to put the Jayhawks up 26-14.
However, Glen Cove struck back with two straight touchdowns, but failed to convert either two-point attempt, making the score 26–24.On the ensuing possession, Max Spector ’26 found Jake Morgan ’27, who broke free down the sideline for a 67-yard touchdown to put the dagger in Glen Cove’s hearts. Jake Morgan’27 then had an interception, and Jericho ran out the clock to seal the 33–24
After the game, Josh Mass ’26 spoke on how meaningful the victory was for the Jayhawks–specifically the seniors–on Senior Night, a night that players work toward their entire career. Mass said, “Every practice, every game, every moment with this team led to that night we left it all on the field. I couldn’t be more proud of this group of guys and everything we’ve been through together. To get that win in front of our families, friends, and community was the perfect way to close this chapter. This team is family, and that game is one I’ll never forget.”
The Jayhawks will close out their season on Thursday evening at home against Valley Stream North, with kickoff scheduled for 6 p.m.
