Nine Years Strong: Jericho Boys Badminton Extends County Dynasty
BY MAXWELL GERSHWIND ’27
On Thursday, October 23, Jericho High School’s Boys Varsity Badminton Team secured their ninth consecutive Nassau County title in a thriller against Great Neck South!
Through hard work and Monday through Saturday practices, the team was able to continue their winning dynasty, ending the season 14-1 in a pure display of dominance. Great Neck South went 15-2 and beat Jericho in the Jayhawks’ only loss in September, ending Jericho’s 70-game winning streak. In the county championship, Jericho knew how to prepare and ultimately reaped revenge against Great Neck South.
The final point of the game against Great Neck South was clinched by Mathew Tang ’27 and Michael Meng ’26, leading Jericho to win the match 4-3 total.
Jericho’s Edwin Chen ’27 reflected on his team’s hard-earned win as being one of great meaning. “This [win] means a lot to us, especially because it was the closest championship we’ve ever had,” said Chen. “It’s also the continuation of our 8-year (now 9-year) win streak, and it was great to keep it going.”
The Jayhawks are now on hold until the Spring, when they play the Suffolk County champions to qualify for the Long Island Title. Chen said that even though the team plays their next big game in the Spring, they will continue to train. According to Chen, “Our preparation is year-round. Many of us train consistently and participate in programs outside of school, including clubs like LIBC.”
Although the future of the Long Island Title is uncertain until May, the Jayhawks continue to soar over the competition on the badminton court.
