Courtside Chronicles: Girls Varsity Basketball Week 2 Recap
BY JORDAN GREENSTEIN ’28
With their 51-39 win against Holy Trinity on December 10, the Jericho Jayhawks moved to 5-0, thanks to key players like Angela Tan ’29, who established her first double-double, 21 points, and 10 rebounds.
In their next game on Saturday, December 13, against Calhoun, the Jayhawks fell 60-52. Calhoun’s Lia Biscardi scored 16 points, while Jericho’s Sonia Ngai ’28 followed with 13 points with a few key triples. When discussing this loss, Ngai emphasized the importance of Jericho’s communication both on and off the court. For example, as Ngai noted, Jericho’s bench doesn’t cheer as loud or as much for their own team as the other schools’ benches. Ngai said, “[A] big factor we need is team energy. I am a big believer that everyone on the team, no matter if you are playing or not, contributes to the game‘s outcome. If we don’t have everyone cheering and uplifting each other, then we can’t play to our fullest potential, and we won’t be able to be successful in winning a lot this season.”
Hopefully, this upcoming week will be more successful for Jericho’s Girls Varsity Basketball Team, as the community helps to pack an energetic nest to support their talented Jayhawks.
As Ngai said, “This year is probably one of our best, strongest, most athletic, and highest performing teams, as everyone plays their part to make each other better.” Ngai’s hopes are high for the rest of the season, as she said, “I believe we will be a winning team and we will be very successful if we continue to do what we do, play as a team, and uplift and encourage everyone when we go through the highs and lows.”
The Jayhawks are away at Long Beach (1-3 overall) on Tuesday, December 16, and will face Great Neck South (0-4 overall) at Sam Springer Gym on Friday, December 19.
Everyone make sure to bring energy as you pack the nest for the Jayhawks’ upcoming games, and stay tuned for the next edition of Courtside Chronicles!
