Funny Foodies Restaurant Review with Austin & Max: Peter Luger Steak House, Great Neck

BY AUSTIN WEISS ’27 & MAXWELL GERSHWIND ’27

Over the weekend, we visited the renowned Peter Luger Steak House, located in Great Neck. This is the second location of Peter Luger, the first one being located in Williamsburg, which opened in 1887.

First, we started with the shrimp cocktail, which was fresh and not fishy at all. It was served with an amazing cocktail sauce on the side. This sauce was tangy and a mix of spicy and sweet. We then got the bacon for our second appetizer. This bacon is not your typical bacon; it is extremely thick-cut and soft, and it melts in your mouth. We both agree that the bacon is a top-three appetizer you could find anywhere.

Then came the main event: the steak.

Since we were with two other friends, we ordered a porterhouse for four. It was cooked medium-rare—the only way to cook a steak. The steak was juicy and rich, a perfect combination, and we didn’t even have to chew it, it melted in our mouths. Adding the famous Peter Luger steak sauce made the already-delectable meal even better.

For our sides, we ordered fries, German fried potatoes, and creamed spinach. The fries were amazingly crispy and had just the right amount of seasoning. The German fried potatoes are Peter Luger’s version of hash browns, and they are also really crispy and flavourful. The creamed spinach was rich and not overly buttery or heavy, which was good.

The last thing we got was the apple strudel, which was a warm pastry, almost like an apple pie, but with a different, softer outside and cinnamon. This strudel was topped with vanilla ice cream and Peter Luger’s own house-made whipped cream called “Schlag.” This is a German whipped cream you can put on anything, and it will taste amazing.

Clearly, Peter Luger lives up to its iconic reputation and remains a New York staple steakhouse for a reason.
