Courtside Chronicles: Girls Varsity Basketball Week of January 5

BY JORDAN GREENSTEIN ’28

On Monday, January 5, the Jericho Girls Varsity Basketball Team kept its 3-game winning streak alive with a 50-40 victory over Bellmore JFK. The Jayhawks were fierce on the offensive boards, with Sonia Ngai ’28 and Sophie Green ’26 combining for 25 rebounds and 15 points.

In one of the most competitive games of the season so far, Jericho fell to New Hyde Park at an away game on Wednesday, January 7, sustaining their second loss of the season. New Hyde Park’s Maeve Downing, who touts the title of second in conference with points-per-game, led her team to a victory of 66-56, scoring 27 points total in the game. Meanwhile, Jericho’s Sonia Ngai ’28 carried with 18 points, and Co-Captain Sadie Krangle ’26 scored 15 points.

Defense has played a huge role in Jericho’s successful record so far this season. At the mid-season mark, Sadie said, “Defense has been the most important factor of our game. When we play team defense, we unlock a new type of momentum that then helps us become successful on offense. Each win that we have had this season is because of our team defense and communication.”

On Saturday, January 10, the Jayhawks recovered their record with a win against Hewlett. Jericho’s Sophie Green, Sonia Ngai, and Angela Tan ’29 all contributed 11 points each toward a total score of 45-30. In addition to all the Jericho buckets, they were once again “flying through the air” grabbing rebounds with Sophie Green snagging 15 rebounds, reminding me of Mitchell Robinson, who is a tough center for the New York Knicks.

Stay tuned for the next edition, and see you all courtside as the Jayhawks continue to keep up their winning ways!
