Courtside Chronicles: Season Finale
BY JORDAN GREENSTEIN ’28
This season was an absolute rollercoaster for the Jericho Girls Varsity Basketball team, packed with huge wins, tough losses, and a well-rounded Jayhawks lineup.
On Saturday, February 28, the Jayhawks’ season unfortunately came to an end against the undefeated MacArthur Generals’ squad in the second round of playoffs. With a score of 34-53, Angela Tan ’29 led Jericho’s charge on the court, scoring 21 of the 34 total points.
Even though the Jayhawks lost this game, they totaled an overall record of 15-7, including playoffs, ending their season with a 68.18% win percentage. At the end of the season, the Jayhawks’ leading scorers included Sadie Krangle ’26, who averaged 13.3 points; Angela Tan, who averaged 11.1 points; and Sonia Ngai ’28, who averaged 10 points.
While a playoff loss is never ideal, Coach Allison D’Antonio was excited that the Jayhawks made it to the second round of the playoffs this season. She said, “The highlight of the season was earning a home playoff game in the first round and defeating Mepham. I’ve been a coach in this program for 12 seasons, and we had never made it out of the first round before, so to do it on our home court made it even more special.”
Coach D’Antonio was not surprised by the team’s success this season. “We had 11 returning players, including four who have been with us since eighth or ninth grade, so I knew this year had the potential to be the culmination of years of hard work and dedication,” said Coach D’Antonio. “From the first practice to the final game, it felt like a continuation of the foundation we had built in prior seasons, with the girls consistently turning what we worked on in practice into results on the court.”
Looking ahead, Coach D’Antonio described how next year could be Jericho’s rebuilding stage. While many seniors are leaving, a strong pool of underclassmen are joining the squad, harnessing this year’s momentum toward successful seasons to come.
A few of these younger talents have already proven themselves on the court this past season, including rising junior Sonia Ngai and rising sophomore Angela Tan. “We’re fortunate to have two All-County Honorable Mention players returning in Angela Tan and Sonia Ngai. Their leadership and experience will be incredibly valuable as they help guide the younger players around them,” said Coach D’Antonio.
While ultimately the future of the 2026-2027 season is unknown, one thing’s for sure: the 2025-2026 season was one for the books and epic to keep up with courtside.
